During the CRUCIAL teen years, emerging adults are drawing conclusions about how they see themselves, their place in the world, their interests and how they relate to subject matter. Never is it more important that authentic, living (not institutionalized) connections are made to formal academics, remaining true to passions while at the same time engaging in academic discipline.
”While it is true that formal academics are developmentally appropriate for the teenager, few schools address the larger developmental needs of the teen to understand themselves, engage and find their place in the world. Few programs engage students imaginations, challenge their wills and give them a means to contribute back to society. channels this intense energy and allows students to be surprised by their own genius, make mistakes safely and succeed beyond their own expectations.
The availability of alternative education programs which focus on developmental needs of the child, taper off as children get older. It is argued that teens, now capable of abstract thought are ready for formal academics within a traditional school system. While it is true that formal academics are developmentally appropriate for the teenager, few schools address the larger developmental needs of the teen to understand themselves, engage and find their place in the world. Few programs engage students imaginations, challenge their wills and give them a means to contribute back to society.
